Do You Care Too Much?

The truth about caring for those who do.

I was slightly offended by a friend’s feedback on my article about gun violence. She quipped, “It must be hard carrying the weight of the world on your shoulders.”

I stepped back for a while thinking to myself, maybe I do care too much. There is little I can personally do to end the troubles in the world.

I can’t stop kids in Chicago from buying a gun and stealing a car, as Mack Davis wrote in his iconic song, “In the Ghetto.” Elvis made it a hit in 1969.

We only recycle about 10% of the plastics we use, but I can’t stop boaters from dumping their trash in the ocean.

I can’t clear all the carbon in the atmosphere. People must commute and heat their homes.

After a long while I rested my thinking on the truth…

Troubles in the world are solved by people who do care too much.

They care too much to turn their back on young people who lose hope and resort to violence.

They care too much to look the other way on the soiled and spoiled waterways of the world.

They care too much to neglect a world that is negligently heating the atmosphere and choking life on this planet.

You may be looking for your purpose in life. The search will end when you discover your small part to play in solving problems that plague your family, your community, your world. Your children, grandchildren and beyond will thank you.
